Protecting Garage Floors

It is essential for the garage owners to take measures for protection of their garage floors in order to make it durable, functional and enduring. The garage is a place where motor vehicles are parked and repaired and old chairs, cabinets and books are stored. Usually the garage is that area of the house which is suffers from wear and tear more often than other rooms of the house.

Garage floors are often subject to damage which can result from underground water seepage and spillage of oil, grease, caustics, strong chemicals, car battery acid and brake fluid, salt, rain water, dust etc. Due to pressure of heavy motor vehicles, machinery, cabinets and boxes, the garage floor may experience extreme weight which leads to floor cracking. Consequently, the need to install protective measures becomes essential.

There are various ways of protecting the garage flooring. The most fundamental and cheap way is the application of paint on the floor. There are two types of paints; epoxy paints and latex paints. Epoxy paints are preferred over latex paints as they give the floor a smooth and glossy look. Also, they are resistant to heat, chemicals and stains. They are well known for their property to conceal any cracks and dirt marks on the floor. In comparison to the latex paints, epoxy paints take less time to dry and are easy to apply. Before the application of garage floor paint, it is important to clean the floor from dust using a wet swab.

Another way to protect garage floors is the installation of polyvinyl chloride pads or simply PVC. The pads come on the form of square or rectangular tiles and in rolls. Customized padding is also available. They are easy to clean as epoxy flooring. PVC pads are strictly impermeable which means that they will allow naught to pass through them like water, chemicals, oil and grease thus, protecting the garage floor successfully.

Placing mats on the concrete floor also act as a protective covering. Mats are mostly available in colorful plastic material. Mats have the property to absorb water and oil. They are usually installed beneath the car parking place of the garage. They are sturdy and reduce instances of slipping and falling. They are usually the non permanent form of garage flooring and can be easily replaced after a period of a month or two, depending upon the garage usage.

Metal and ceramic tiles can also act as garage floor covers. They are available in various sizes and textures which give the garage a perfect appearance. By using the mentioned floor coverings, the garage can give an ideal showroom look.
