wood expansion and contraction which way

The cells in the hardwood will take on or absorb moisture when the relative humidity is high, or when exposed to water. Expansion takes place, and the hardwood grows, for lack of a clearer term, across the grain or width of the plank (see below, not all will react this way). Conversely, when air moisture levels decrease,

Hey Samurai, Aren't you afraid of expansion and contraction? Samurai: "No, I am not afraid of expansion and contraction, and here's why "

Wood expansion has to be taken into account in the design and building of any projects. Typically, wood moves twice as much in the tangential direction as it does in the radial direction. For woodworking purposes, we ignore movement in the axial direction. The tangential direction is along the curve of the tree rings.

Moisture content of the wood at delivery. The only way to accurately predict wood movement is to know the MC of the material when you receive it. Moisture content is measured using a moisture meter. Failure to check your delivered material means you have no chance of anticipating movement problems.

This end table by Richard Slosky demonstrates one way to attach a table top while allowing it to be able to expand and contract with changes in moisture content. Small L-shaped "buttons" are screwed to the bottom of the table top while an expanded slot on the inside of the table skirt accepts the leg of the button. As the top

Direction. Wood that expands and contracts due to changes in moisture content will do so along predictable lines. With a little bit of knowledge, you can predict the degree of wood movement, and take appropriate action to accomodate the movement. Wood shrinks most in the direction of the annual growth rings

Why Stability is Important. When customers are looking at selecting a new hardwood product, one of the last things they probably consider is the dimensional stability. with quartersawn (Figure B). Expansion and contraction follows the grain direction about 4 to 1, making the quartered boards significantly more stable.

The wood siding does not grow appreciably in length, but does increase in thickness with wetting and then shrinks with drying (Figure 4). The expansion and contraction with changing moisture content stress the paint film and causes the paint to fail over time. This is helped along by ultra-violet radiation
