Garage floor painting gives your garage flooring a stylish and new appearance. Easy to maintain, it resists staining and sheds water and dirt. Painting garage floors helps in hiding the imperfections in the concrete flooring. Nonetheless guidelines should be properly followed for achieving optimum results.

With a variety of garage floor paints available, applying them is simply a 3 step procedure, preparing the floor- applying the paint and giving it sufficient time to properly dry. Painting a garage floor is easy and people mostly handle it themselves or with the help of a friend or two at the most.

Proper preparation is vital for any job and garage floor painting is no exception. Before you begin ensure that the area is well ventilated as you will be dealing with high concentrated chemicals. Proper protective gear should also be worn and children shall be kept away at all times.

Preparation

Painting garage floors effectively is primarily reliant on the preparation of the floor. The floor should be thoroughly swept and cleaned. To remove the stains you may use a 3 to 1 mixture of water and bleach, or simply a commercially prepared cleaner. The best way to achieve this is to spray the cleaner on the stains and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Then scrub the stains with a stiff-bristle brush. Finally rinse the area well with clean water. A handy tip is to stand at the back of the garage; this allows you to use pressure water for tough stains and then leave it to dry.

Next step is to determine whether your floor requires etching or not. Sprinkle water on the floor. If the water is absorbed the floor needs not to be etched. Otherwise the concrete may need additional preparation through etching.

Once the floor is etched, let the floor completely dry as the floor so that it will be fully prepared and ready for garage floor paint.

Painting

Garage floor paints should be carefully mixed as advised on the kit. Painting garage floors require a long-handled paint roller to apply a primer coat. Once evenly applied remember to let it dry completely. This normally takes 8 to 10 hours.

For the next coat it is recommended that you use nylon brushes. Carefully and evenly apply a coat with gentle strokes for even distribution and let it dry. Once it is completely dried check and if required apply another coat.

Garage epoxy is generally used for the epoxy coatings used for garage floors. Garage floor epoxy coatings are highly in demand and appear to be the choice of many home and commercial garage owners. Before purchasing epoxy garage floor coating you must be familiar with the types of epoxy available.

Like every product in demand, there is a huge range of garage epoxy available in the market for various purposes. With difference in prices and mixture base there is one precisely made to suit your garage floor needs.

Amongst various brands available, epoxy is generally divided into three categories. Water based epoxy coatings are not for commercial use as it applies a thin coat but hides nothing. However may be a good choice for residential garage epoxy flooring provided proper surface preparations are made. Solvent based epoxy coatings resemble oil based enamels. However, these epoxies are not common any more. Solvent free epoxy coatings are thick enough to hide many floor flaws and may be recommended for commercial epoxy garage floors.

With innovative advantages and new product launches, it becomes impossible to list all the brands, however here are a few popular varieties.

WATER BOND is water based epoxy. It applies a thin coat and is recommended for residential use. It comes in various colors and a 5 gal unit ranges around $320.

INDUSTRIAL FLOOR EPOXY is a top quality solvent-free epoxy. It’s a 100% solids floor epoxy and highly recommended for commercial use. It comes in limited colors and a 15 gal unit ranges around $880.

ROUGH COAT is a special solvent based epoxy with grit already mixed in for non-slip. It comes in light tan or khaki color and a 1 gal unit ranges around $90

BIO VEE SEAL is easy to use water based concrete moisture reducer and a 5 gal unit is around $200.

BIO VEE GLOSS is a water-based, low cost acrylic concrete sealer. Its 1 gal unit ranges around $50

Applying epoxy garage floor coating requires the extensive floor preparation for a superior finish. Once properly applied garage floor epoxy give a new look to the garage floor, hiding all sorts of stains, cracks and floor flaws.

Epoxy garage floor coating is a good idea as it is sturdy and durable. Compared to bare concrete floors, epoxy concrete floors only require nominal maintenance, and have more resistance to stains, corrosions, cracks. There are many types of garage floor epoxy coatings available and each is prepared for a certain type of treatment and application. Garage floor epoxy coating is found in three types – water based epoxy, solvent based epoxy and 100 percent solid epoxy. All the various types have common characteristics though, such as high resistance to chemicals; durability, high bond strength, low porosity, other chemicals like oils and grease can’t seep through easily.

The water based epoxy has a solid content of between 40 and 60 percent. The biggest advantage it has is that it does not have any potentially dangerous solvent fumes, making it the safer option. It is also the cheaper option, as a kit for water based epoxy coating costs considerably less than a kit for solvent based epoxy and 100 percent solid epoxy.

The Quikrete companies are the largest manufacturers of packaged concrete in the United States and also have a line to protect, seal and decorate garage floors, driveways, patios, etc. Quickrete epoxy garage floor coating is available in a water based solution only and in tan, gray and 64 tintable colors. One coat is advertised to provide an attractive semi gloss finish to any drab concrete floor. Quickrete garage floor coating is said to be two times stronger than concrete and produce the toughest garage floor. This is because of Quikrete products containing a special resin technology which maximizes the bond between the floor coating and the concrete. One kit for a one car garage (around 250 square feet) costs around $80.

Solvent based epoxy also contain 40 to 60 percent solid. They are popular for garage flooring as they as they offer a wide variety of colors. The good thing about them is that they have a good adhesive property and permeate well into the surface. However the solvents that are used are hazardous are nature and they release fumes which if inhaled are harmful for health. Thus while application is important that protective gear is worn and after the application the garage should be kept well ventilated.

100 percent epoxy, as the name suggests, contain epoxy in its purest form. This type of epoxy is more difficult to manage as it hardens up very quickly. It is considerably more expensive and mostly for professional use, though it is available for home use as well. It is much thicker than water based epoxy, which is the reason it is preferred.

Epoxy floor coatings are sturdy and long lasting and hence a good idea for any surface. Epoxy floor coating may be used for garage floors, laundry room floors, basements, shop floors, restaurants, showrooms etc due to their durability and ability to resist oil, dirt, water, grease and other containments.

Epoxy garage floor coatings are good for protecting garage floors as epoxy coatings are stronger than granite and make a tougher garage floor. They are designed to channel liquids and debris out of the garage and are resistant to all household chemicals as well as mechanical shocks. They are also easy to clean and maintain. This makes them ideal for garage floors and since epoxy floor coatings may be made to satisfy users demands, they are all the more convenient.

Epoxy garage floor coating can be done by yourself or with the help of a professional. Nearly all kits come with an instructions DVD which tells you how to do the task step by step. Epoxy floor coating kits come with your choice of epoxy color, epoxy blend to clean and prepare the surface for coating, staining and sealing the surface and an epoxy coat primer and concrete sealer to be used after etching but before putting the epoxy coating. Gloves, a mixing bucket, squeegee and other materials to help may also be included. The gallons of color included vary from kit to kit, depending on for what floor size – 300 square feet, 600 square feet etc – the kit has been bought.

There are a lot of basecoat colors and decorative flakes to choose from which allows you to create a custom garage floor.

All epoxy floor coating kits do not come with a clear topcoat. However, it is recommended that if it is not included in the kit then you buy it separately as it improves the look and the life of the epoxy coating. It is very useful as it secures the color chips from coming loose from the epoxy and from the color of the epoxy from fading away due to the sunlight and other contaminants.

Epoxy kits are easily available. Doing a search online will yield many companies that are dedicated to producing epoxy floor coatings and are selling both their products and their services. Prices for the kits vary depending on the floor size that needs to be coated as well as the color chip flakes and whether it is commercial grade (100 percent solid epoxy), solvent based epoxy or water based epoxy. Water based epoxy kits are cheaper with the kit for a one car garage (around 250 square feet) available for about $60-$80. Commercial grade epoxy coating is thicker as it has higher solids count and is hence more durable. A kit for 250-300 square feet will cost around $250.

An epoxy floor is ideal for shops, factories, home garages and rooms where kids gather for fun activities. Epoxy floors are becoming very popular nowadays because of the several advantages they possess. Of them, a few noticeable ones can be seen in the paragraphs below.

Epoxy is a chemical compound which when applied to the floor gives it radiancy and shine, which other type of floors are unable to provide. It gives the floor a very smooth look which is similar to that of painted and polished doors and cabinets.

It is stain resistant, unlike other types of floors such as wooden and concrete which lack the ability to sustain any spillage of chemicals. This property makes the epoxy flooring perfect for motor workshops where frequent splattering of oil and grease takes place and can be moped off easily. In home garages, which are usually the never-visited-back rooms of the house, there may be certain chemicals or liquids which after a certain time period start seeping out of the boxes and baskets as a result of metal processing and galvanizing, and gives the floor an ugly look. The epoxy flooring would not let the stains to stick on it even after months and the garage owner can easily wipe them off with a wet cloth.

The epoxy coating makes the floor slip resistant. The floor although looks glossy as a polished marble but not slippery at all which removes chances of unwanted accidents like fractures. It is also used as a floor sealant, which has the ability to conceal any chips and cracks or dips in the floor. It also protects the floor from the underground leakage of water and liquid pollutants, which are chemically corrosive. The floors are made to resists the chemical attacks of caustics, water, acids and solvents.

In garages, the motor vehicles, heavy boxes and machineries are kept for a long time, which a normal concrete floor is unable to stand and either cracks up or becomes dinged. This does not happen with the floors coated with epoxy as it serves as a protective covering for the floor. It increases the life of the floor by making it more durable and strong.

The epoxy floor paint does not come too expensive like other floor coatings. It is easy to apply and can be done by the garage owner easily with the help of a roller. Epoxy is an adhesive, which makes it easy to stick on the concrete, wooden or cemented floor.

The epoxy floor coating is available in a range of colors and combination of three or more colors can be used to make different patterns on the floor. This will enhance the look of the garage and make it appealing to the eyes, no matter how packed it is.

The best part about an epoxy floor coating is that you can install it yourself without having to hire professionals for the job. Not only do you save on money when you do the epoxy garage floor coating yourself but you get more satisfaction with the finished floor as it your own doing. Most people install epoxy floor coatings in their homes themselves. These floors are good to look at. They don’t require much cleanliness and one swipe of wet cloth is enough to give the floor that spick and span look. They are resistant to oil stain as well as other fluids and have the ability to bead water. Apart from that, with an epoxy floor, you’re garage looks great and gives the feeling of a showroom.

In order to apply an epoxy floor coating on your garage floor, get yourself an installation kit from the nearest hardware store. Theses kits have all the tools and the materials that you would require in order to apply the epoxy concrete floor coating. Before doing anything, you need to make sure that the surface on which the coat will be applied is absolutely dust free. Sweep the floor to remove any dust particles and dirt. Not only do you have to clean the floor from dust but after that, you should apply an etching solution on the floor and scrub thoroughly. Make sure that you wear protective gear like gloves and boots when you are applying the etching solution. Etch the floor in small sections and then rinse it with water. Allow the floor to dry for about three to four hours.

Prepare the epoxy paint by pouring the hardener into it and stirring it. Make sure that you stir the mixture for enough time so that the two components are perfectly mixed. Apply the paint within two hours of its preparation. Use a roller to evenly apply the epoxy coat over the whole floor.. Cover the area section by section to ensure even application of the coat. It entirety depends upon you whether you go for a double coat or not, If you do, let the first coat dry for about 12 hours or even more and then apply the second coat.

Apply the color flakes by taking a handful and spreading them evenly over the wet floor, just as you sprinkle fertilizer in your lawn. You then need to prepare the top coat for application. The hardener is poured into the clear top coat and you have to stir it properly to make sure it is completely mixed. Add antiskid granules if you want to. Then apply the top coat, working section by section. Work the mixture in one direction and then in the perpendicular direction. Let the floor dry and you’re good to go.

An epoxy garage floor is a convenient way of getting rid of dirty concrete, leaving a clean and shiny epoxy garage floor coating. Not only is an epoxy garage flooring easy to clean but it also looks good. Your garage looks like a showroom with an epoxy floor. The coating of epoxy resists all types of stains including oil stains and it can be wiped clean like a marble top. If you spill any liquids on the epoxy garage floor, you don’t need to worry as the garage flooring is able to bead water.

If there is uneven application of the coating or an abnormality in the concrete, it can be covered as there are many colors you can use in the epoxy floor. Due its shiny and polished finish, most people are worried that an epoxy floor is slippery and the tires won’t be able to grip it. To make sure your car gets a better grip, you can add antiskid additives to the epoxy coating which gives the tires the grip that they need on a rainy day.

Installation of the floor is an easy process which can be completed by homeowners themselves. There are many installation kits available in the markets which allow you to install the epoxy floor yourself without having to get professional help. The installation can take about 2 days. Installation kits can be found at any normal hardware store. Before you apply the epoxy, you need to make sure that the surface on which it is going to be applied is completely clean. To do that, completely sweep the floor to remove any dust and dirt. If the floor is painted, degloss the floor first and then scrub it with a cleaner. After that, rinse it and let it dry.

After the floor is clean, you need to apply an etching solution on it. Rinse the floor and allow it to dry for about three to four hours. When you’re done with the etching, mix the epoxy paint and paint on the epoxy using a roller in order to roll the epoxy evenly on the floor. You can go for two coats if you want a thicker coverage. To do that, let the first coat dry for about 12 to 24 hours and then apply the second coat. You can then apply the color flakes but make sure that you do so while the area is wet. After applying the color flakes, prepare the final top coat by mixing hardener in it and then apply it using a clean brush.

Garage floor epoxy can be applied upon a concrete surface in order to protect it from damage such as caused by spills and oil stains. There are a great deal of options in terms of applying protective measures. In regards to epoxy flooring, one has to spend a lot of time and effort in ensuring that the floor is devoid of any dust and dirt particles before the actual paint is applied.

Consequently, there are specific steps that one has to follow in order to ensure that the epoxy garage floor coating remains durable and functional for a longer duration. The first step is to brush the walls around the area upon which the paint is to be applied. Particularly, spider webs and dust producing particles have to be removed. One also has to place painters tape upon the specific areas of the wall which should not come in contact with the epoxy covering. The best way to ensure that is to remove any additional tape portions by using a knife in order to prevent the tape from coming into contact with the floor.

If a sander has been used on the floor then it is important to use a stiff bristled broom to remove any sand particles that might interfere with the process of application of the garage floor epoxy paint. On the other hand, a completely new concrete surface should be cleaned with a floor etching cleaner that can completely remove any sand, dust and dirt particles. In such as situation, a floor sander should not be used. After that process, one has to clean the entire floor with water and wait for it to dry. This ensures that the entire surface is clean and ready for application of epoxy garage floor coating.

The next step is to apply the coating upon the entire floor area especially the parts where it touches the tape encased portions of the wall. A 3/8 inch nap roller is recommended for use and the epoxy paint is poured into the roller pan. In order to paint efficiently without wasting any time, one should start the process from the farthest end of the room. After the paint has been completely applied to the floor, one has to let it dry out. Upon completion of the drying process, one of the most essential steps is to apply a clear coat on top of the epoxy coating using the same process as before.

Once the clear coating has dried off, the painter’s tape is removed from the walls and the garage floor epoxy surface is ready to be used.
